Cause areas
Animal welfare
The EA Animal Welfare Fund made its most recent payout at the beginning of December. The three primary areas they made grants to in this round were: large-scale and neglected animal populations (i.e. farmed fish), large-scale and neglected geographies (i.e. work in medium and large Asian countries) and exploratory work in policy or alternative proteins (i.e. attempting to secure government funding for research and development for alternative proteins).
The Humane League announced their plans for 2024. They are focused on these core objectives: eradicating battery cages globally by forming regional teams and tailoring strategies, holding corporations accountable for their cage-free commitments, driving legislative changes in the US via the Animal Policy Alliance, and mobilising more supporters to advocate against factory farming, all to reduce animal suffering in the food industry.

GiveWell is excited to announce its 2023 recommendations to donors. For donors who want to support the programs that GiveWell is most confident in, they recommend the Top Charities Fund, which is allocated among their four top charities. For donors with a higher degree of trust in GiveWell and willingness to take on more risk, their top recommendation is the All Grants Fund, which goes to a wider range of opportunities and may have a higher impact per dollar. They estimate that donations to the programs they recommend can save a life for roughly $5,000 on average, or have a similarly strong impact by increasing incomes or preventing suffering.
GiveWell shared personal stories from their staff members on the thinking behind their donations and where they chose to donate this year.
New Incentives has enrolled over 2.5 million infants, disbursed more than 8.6 million cash transfers, and encouraged more than 30 million vaccinations across nine states in northern Nigeria since launching its program in 2017. They are still expanding and working toward enrolling 5.6 million infants over the next three years.
